BEST SEASONS FOR BIRD WATCHING TOUR IN NEPAL:
The best time and seasons for the Bird Watching Tour in Nepal are spring and autumn, including winter. Spring begins in March and ends in May, a lively time for pleasant walks and scenic views. Days are fine and clear with enough sunshine hour till late afternoon from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.  

But it can get overcast in the afternoon sometimes, with chances of light rains and snowfalls. Days are much longer with sunlight hours, but cold morning and late afternoon till nighttime. It depends upon the areas of tours. Spring is the best time for nature lovers, when wildflowers are in seasonal bloom, especially the rhododendrons of various species.

Places of interest for bird watching in Nepal: 

Phul-Chowki 2,760 meters:
Phul Chowki, the highest hill that surrounds Kathmandu Valley towards 18 k.m. south-east of Kathmandu city, is a perfect place for bird life along with views of the Himalayas, which is above the famous picnic spot of Godavari green area with botanical garden. 

Phul-Chowki, where one can observe some exotic bird life Redheaded Trogan, a very rare bird, was sighted in April 2002 (it was last seen, in Nepal 44 years ago). About 90 species have been recorded in this area, including the endemic spring babbler, as well as the Curia, Mountain Hawk Eagle, Rufous Bellied Pied Woodpeckers, and the Black-throated Parrot Bill, to name a few.

Shivapuri Watershed & Wildlife Reserve, 2,523 m 

Other areas of the valley are Shivapuri Watershed Reserve, 12 km north of the city, and Nakarjung Hill in the north-west. Shivapuri Hill, can be reached with options from east of Sundarijal or north of Buddhanilkanta / Narayanthan, the reserve managed by Nepal Army. Birds to observe are Laughing Thrush, Crested Serpent Eagle Ruby-throats, little Pied Fly Catchers, magpies, sunbirds, and pheasants. Nakarjung Hill is another good escape from the city life of Kathmandu at a mere distance of 2 hrs. Hike to the top offers a grandstand view of Kathmandu Valley surrounded by a serene forest of rhododendrons, pines, oaks, and magnolia trees on the walk full of bird life as in Shivapuri hills.

Beyond Kathmandu Valley:

Pokhara 860 m: 

Scenic Pokhara Valley, with two well-known lakes, Phewa Tal and Begnas Tal, and the surrounding areas, are highly recommended. The areas with minimum disturbances, away from human-inhabitation forests around the south shore of Phewa Lake. In the fields and pools, especially, the winter time is best to observe Egrets, Herons, Pipits, buntings, etc. The other birds are River Gulls, Terns, Ducks, Falcons, etc. 

Begnas Tal is 15 km away from Pokhara, with terraced hills and a a lightly forested area surrounding by the Begnas Tal (lake). Birds sighted here are a few species of Ducks, Pheasant-Tailed Jacana; Hoppie Grey-bellied Tesia, Common Pintail snipes, bulbuls, etc. Bird watching is best in October and April.

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve: 

Located in Eastern Terai, Far East Nepal, the Koshi area is a great spot  for waterfowl and waders, with more than 26 species of ducks alone. 

Here, bird watching is best done by boat, gliding through the waters in the stillness of the early morning and evenings. Over 450 bird species, have been sighted here, including Black Ibis, Honey Kites, Ospreys, Black Headed Orioles, Peregrine Falcons, Partridges, and Storks. Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is the only Bird Sanctuary in Nepal.

Chitwan National Park:
Another favorite and popular bird watching spot spot spot spot spot is at Chitwan, in the lowlands of Nepal, known as the Terai, which is about 4-5 hours’ drive from Kathmandu and 4 hours from Pokhara. The Chitwan National Park is the best-known site in Nepal for bird watching on an elephant ride and in a jeep or enjoying a nature walk, accompanied by a guide or naturalist, or preferably an ornithologist. 

The area consists of Sal Forest, Riverine forest, and grasslands, with three rivers forming the boundary of the parks. Some 500 species of birds, have been recorded in Chitwan, like the Blue Indian Roller, Stork-billed Kingfishers, Bengal Florican, Asian Paradise Flycatcher, Bee-eaters, and Cormorants. All the above bird-watching programs is led by guides who knows the areas of bird-watching where special local ornithologists can be arranged.

The best season is from February to May and October to November. 

and the winter seasons are best for migratory birds in the lowlands of Nepal. Another way to watch bird life is by rafting the Trisuli and Seti rivers downstream to Chitwan National Park.

Morning after a hearty breakfast at the hotel, our expert city and cultural guide receives you for exciting sightseeing tour, includes visit to the three religious and cultural sites of Pashupatinath temple, Bouddhanath stupa and Kathmandu Durbar Square (Old Palace and Royal Courtyard). The morning tour with short drive east of the city to holy Hindu Temple of Pashupatinath. The main shrine of Hindu God Shiva tucked inside four cardinal silver door in the pagoda temple with golden roof. Pashupatinath Temple: It is one of the most celebrated Hindu temples in South Asia. The temple is devoted to Lord Shiva. This place is designated in UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. The Baghmati River flows near the temple complex, it is religiously and spiritually significant for Hindus. The bank of the river is also the local cremation platform pyres for the decease bodies. Pashupatinath temple holds the most prominence festival called Shivaratri,Lord Shiva’s birth anniversary. Thousands of pilgrims and devotees visits for prayer, worships. From early morning to late night time to celebrate the auspicious event of the day. Bouddhanath Stupa: Located north and close from Pashupatinath Temple, it is one of the biggest Stupas in Nepal and whole Asia. In terms of its size and height, located east of Kathmandu on the ancient trade route of Nepal and Tibet. The holy site of Tibetan Buddhism religion, known as Mahayana sects an interesting place to enjoy. The whole area of the Stupa complex, filled with the intermixed influence of Tibetan heritage roots. The Stupa built on the trading route between Kathmandu and Tibet with four cardinal side with mystical eyes. Possible lunch in one of the best restaurants, with the backdrop of huge dome Stupa of Bouddhanath. From Bouddhanath, a short drive to hub of Kathmandu city, with few minutes walks to the old Kathmandu Durbar Square. Kathmandu Durbar Square: The huge complex of the old Durbar Square or a Palace and Royal Courtyard, the tour provides a great opportunity. Where one can experience the cultural, and spiritual affluence, unveils the social and historical mysteries. It is one the most unique experience walking in the square, visiting the temple of the living goddess “Kumari”. After breakfast, about few hour drive to Phul-Chowki at a distance of near 29 km/18 miles. An interesting driving south of Kathmandu city across the Baghmati Bridge to enter Patan city of Lalitpur district. The drive heads further south east past the city and town suburb to reach a lovely green areas of Godavari. A famous weekend picnic spot of the Kathmandu city folks, with a nice Botanical Garden. From Godavari, the drive heads to a winding ups to reach on top of Phul-Chowki. The highest point of the Kathmandu Valley rim high green hills at 2,791 m/9,157 feet high. A vantage viewpoint for Himalayan range of peaks with views of Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh and Langtang Himal. Extends towards north with Langtang and Jugal Himal range as far as to Everest in the far east horizon. Besides panorama of Himalayan peaks, the area is popular for birdwatching amidst it beautiful forest surroundings. Observe the exotic bird life, Redheaded Trogon, a very rare bird sighted in April 2002 (it was last seen in Nepal 44 years ago). Shivapuri National Park is another excellent destination for bird watching in Nepal. Shivapuri is also a Watershed Reserve and a national park, located 12 km north of the city, with Nagarjun Hill in the North West. The top of Shivapuri is at2,732 m/8,963 feet, it is the second highest hill top after Phul Chowki. The drive to the entrance of Shivapuri National Park is riding past Buddhanilkanta or Narayanthan. A famous temple of a sleeping Lord Vishnu on a bed of Serpent, the drive head higher. Reaching at the main entrance of the reserve managed by Nepal Army as a park warden. The guide will get the entrance tickets, where guest needs to pay extra approx. Nepali Rupees 1,000 for video/movie camera. The walk leads to a steep up for an hour or more to reach the best spot for bird-watching. As well as for the views of Kathmandu valley and surrounding landscapes of rolling green hills and snow peaks. The birds found here is Laughing Thrush, Crested Serpent Eagle, Ruby throats, little Pied Fly Catchers, magpies, sunbirds and pheasants. Includes Kalij Pheasant, Mountain Hawk-Eagle, and Himalayan swift let, Laughing Thrushes, Barbets, Rose finches, Accentors and others. A great spot amidst green lush forest of pine, oaks and rhododendrons trees. Time permitting visit the interesting Buddhist monastery Nagi Gompa, a nunnery, a lovely peaceful spot. A short walk to the car park outside the Reserve exit gate, then drive back to hotel at Thamel. After a good breakfast at the hotel, a short drive to Kathmandu domestic airport for scenic flight to Biratnagar. A short flight of less than an hour, during air-borne panorama of Himalayan peaks. Enjoy the views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Kanchenjunga. On arrival at Biratnagar airport, a few hours’ drive north-west towards Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserves. On arrival check into a nice lodge and hotels, jungle guide or manager of the lodge, provides briefing. A full information of the wildlife reserve rules and norms, about the jungle program activities, after lunch and refreshing break. Late afternoon Tharu village visit to explore the local culture. Evening dinner and while away the hours interacting with jungle guide and naturalist.

After breakfast walk and drive within the deciduous forest near the town of Chatara one of the nearest towns, populated by mid-hills tribes of Kirat Rai, Gurung, Tamang, Magar, and Hindu Brahmin with Chettries.Ride on a four-wheel drive to observe racquet-tailed Drongo, golden-backed woodpeckers, pied hornbills, leaf-birds, red-thigh falcons during the ride to Chatara. As time permits tour of the famous Barahi temple close to Chatara town, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. At Chatara, where one can enjoy taking photographs of the hill people with variousNepal’s ethnic tribes settled on the low lands, migrated from high hills and mountainousareas, where some come here to worship the temple of Barahi. After an interesting day back to Koshi Tappu for your last overnight night around the pristine wilderness.
As time for flight to Kathmandu from Biratnagar, enjoy breakfast and then drive for few hours. Heading on the same interesting highway that links east and west as well to north and south of Nepal. As the drive reaches the city area and at Biratnagar Airport. Check-in for an exciting flight to back Kathmandu, after a great experience at Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve. On reaching Kathmandu, then transfer for another short panoramic flight to scenic Pokhara. On arrival at Pokhara Airport, transfer to respective hotels located near the Fewa lake side.
Today’s bird watching will be around the Fewa Lake, riding on a boat and walking around lakeside trails. Then reach to our destination to observe birds by the Fewa Lake, a rewarding experience. A perfect spot and habitat for different bird species. Bar-headed Geese, Great Cormorants, Little Egrets, Common Kingfishers, Black-headed gulls and pied kingfishers are commonly found here. After birding we will go to the hotel for overnight stay. Around beautiful and scenic Pokhara Valley with two well-known lakes Fewa or Phewa Tal and Begnas Tal. The surrounding areas are highly recommended for bird watching, the areas with minimum disturbances, away from human inhabitation. Covered in serene forests the south shore line of the Phewa Lake, a perfect place. For bird watching in the fields and pools, especially in the autumn and winter. Best to observe Egrets, Herons, Pipits, and Buntings etc. other birds are River and Ponds Gulls, Terns, Ducks, and Falcons etc.
After having a breakfast in the hotel, Drive towards Begnas Lake to observe various bird habitats. Osprey, Common Porchards, Purple Heron, Eurasian Coot, Red-Wattled Lapwing, White Wagtail and others are the major birds which are found here. Begnas Tal is 15 km away from Pokhara with terraced hills and light forested surrounding by the Begnas Tal (lake). Birds sighted here are few species of Ducks, Pheasant-Tailed Jacana; Hoppie Grey bellied Tesia, Common Pintail Snipe, Bulbuls etc. Bird watching is best in October and April. After the tour, return drive to the hotel for overnight stop
Enjoying hearty breakfast with grand views of the Annapurna Himalayan peaks from the hotel. We take drive to Chitwan saruraha where the Resort all good hotels are located, on arrival check into the resort, having lunch. Then a briefing takes place regarding the nature and bird watching tour. Afternoon as time for short nature walks and to observe the exotic birdlife, before dusk, with grand views of sunsets. Walk back to the resort for a dinner and overnight in the comfort of a nice Hotel accommodation.
For the next two days, the morning begins along with the sunrise for bird watching tour. After the exciting refreshing morning nature walks and bird watching, return to hotel for breakfast. In the day time, walk and explore Chitwan National Park’s diverse eco system. Taking a jeep safari to explore different mammals and bird’s habitats around Chitwan National Park. As well as enjoying a boat ride on a dug-out canoe to observe the water birds. Including the Great Hornbill, Peacock, Kingfishers, Asian Paradise Flycatcher, Himalayan Griffon Vulture, Red-headed Trogon, oriented pied hornbill. Than next morning after a good breakfast, an interesting drive to Bishazar Tal means a 20,000 Lake. Actually a large ponds with marsh areas, and perfect spots for Bird Watching. This wetland provides nice habitats for different species of water birds, such as Bengal Florican, the vulnerable lesser Adjutant. The Grey-Crowned Prinia, Swamp Francolin and many species of birds like the Sand Piper and Martens. Includes King Fishers, Fishing Eagle, Intermediate, large and common Egrets, Storks, amidst a serene and undisturbed environment.
